Abstracted Monoprint (Marcel & Me) Installation in WCA mapping room March 2019
The installation consisted of pieces of black plastic rubbish suspended on thread in various directions across a white cube space. The thread was cotton string dyed with black dye in the washing machine. The dying process had left the string a dark grey colour and made it fluffy. The fluffy grey of the string reminded me of the blurred line of monoprinting.
The title references Duchamp’s mile of string. It is my favourite of his work and I have referenced it in a previous installation with plastic. The piece is about my interaction with art history and my place in that continuum. It is one of a pair of pieces of work on that theme. The sharp contrast of black installation on white background was visually striking. The work lies within an expanded field of drawing.
